Worked example

Solve 2x+1=162^{x+1} = 16.

  1. Rewrite the right side with base 2: 16=2416 = 2^4.
  2. Same base on both sides: 2x+1=242^{x+1} = 2^4.
  3. Equal bases force equal exponents: x+1=4x + 1 = 4.
  4. x=3x = 3. Check: 24=162^4 = 16. ✓

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by the base: 2x=162^x = 16 is not solved by x=8x = 8. Match bases and compare exponents instead.
  • Fraction panic: 2x=182^x = \frac{1}{8} has the clean answer x=3x = -3, because 18=23\frac{1}{8} = 2^{-3}.
  • Missing a shared base: 4x=84^x = 8 looks stuck until both become powers of 2: 22x=232^{2x} = 2^3, so x=32x = \frac{3}{2}.
